VOLUNTEER RAIN GAUGE NETWORK

Volunteers needed!

If you are a teacher looking for a neat class experiment, student seeking community hours or anyone interested in monitoring weather data, the Volunteer Rain Gauge Network program at South Nation Conservation (SNC) is for you!

The program is based on a volunteer observer network which will monitor and record the daily precipitation from March to November within the South Nation watershed.

The precipitation data is important for analysing conditions and potentially predicting times of flood or drought.

Volunteer kits for the Volunteer Rain Gauge Network will be provided by SNC including a rain gauge, basic instructions, precipitation information and data sheets.

Volunteers will be instructed to put rain gauges in a location visited daily and record rainfall amount. Data will be submitted to SNC on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on the individual's preference and the season. During flood season for example, it would be beneficial to have weekly precipitation data. SNC will compile all the data into a spreadsheet, and then summarize and analyze it to produce a yearly summary report provided to participants.
